The objectives of the course will be based on the study, the understanding, the reflexion and the dialectical debate, by students, of the different plastic manifestations and their evolution in the art of sculpture and altarpiece in Spain, from the end of the XV century to the XVIII century. The teacher will develop the following topics or lessons: 1. Antecedents: the sculpture and the altarpiece in the Spanish Low Middle Ages. 2. Sculpture and altarpieces in Spanish Renaissance:proto-renaissance or plateresque, romanist and classical stages. 3. The Baroque altarpiece as synthesis of all the arts. Evolution and different schools of the altarpiece and the Baroque sculpture during the XVII-XVIII centuries. 4. The Royal Academies of Fine Arts and their influence in the creation of the neoclassical altarpiece. Supported by the teacher's lectures and audiovisual means, the students will deepen in the knowledge of the subject, focussing on the chronology and geographical location, the materials, the techniques and procedures, the plastic agents and composition outlines, the artist's social situation, and, especially, the iconography and the iconographic programs of the great plastic art groups elaborated by the main masters of the time.
