The aim of the subject is to make students learn about and understand the main aesthetic ideas during the ancient times, Middle Ages and Modern Epoch, integrating them in their historical context and trying to relate them to the artistical manifestations students already know. Among the contribution of philosophers to the theory of arts and beauty during the ancient times, we have selected, due to their subsequent trancendence, the aesthetic ideas of the Pythagoreans, Democrito, the Sophists, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. As a representative for the Hellenist period we have chosen Plotino, who acts as link with the Middle Ages. From this complex period we analyze the aesthetic ideas of Saint Agustin and Saint Thomas of Aquino. Finally, outstanding contributions among the ones from the Renaissance and the Baroque, in which the artists themselves participate, are those of Alberti, Ficino, Leonardo da Vinci , Miguel Angel, Rubens and Poussin. |
