The general aim of the subject is for the students to acquire basic knowledge about subaquatic archaeology. To do this, first they will analyse the antecedants and characteristics of Submerged Archaeological Heritage, to be able to define the concept of an archaeological site. They will go on to learn different methods of prospection and excavation, involving: materials, equipment, phases, etc. From the perspective of protection and conservation of submerged materials, they will analyse the different types and their specific problems or requirements. Special emphasis will be put on cargoships and their contents, fundamentally to study trade in the past, as well as the study of Naval architecture, both descriptive and in terms of parts and elements of the ships and and the development of ship-building techniques. Finally, they will look at the sources used for the study of ancient shipping, the characteristics of the Mediterranean, the main routes and ports of call in ancient maritime trade and the relationship between the most important sea ports.
