The key aspects of contemporary issues related to the relationship between body and mind will be studied in this unit. The program is designed to offer students not only knowledge regarding different positions on the mind-body problem, but will also offer the opportunity of discussing and questioning contemporary points of view. The following text will be used a guideline: "Minds, Cause, and Mechanisms. A Case against Physicalism" Josep E. Corbí and Josep L. Prades, (Oxford, Blackwell Publishers, 2000). a partial translation of this book will be issued to students. PROGRAMME: 1. Physics and mind: The dominant point of view. 2. Initial tension: Restricted content and multiple realization. 3. Dispositions, minimalism and intrinsic caused powers. 4 "Ceteris paribus" laws and autonomy of non-basic properties. 5. Strict laws, causes and causation background 6. Physical closure and mental causation. 7. Mental causation and mechanical implementation. 8. Searching the world and externalism of the mind |
