OBJECTIVES The programs of psycho-social intervention based on social support and the self-help movement represent a basic contribution to the change of conventional paradigms of the provision of socialand health services. This subject proposes a different approach to other more traditional, an approach that is based on the power of the support and the mutual help among people. with the subject it the importance and the role that social support can carry out in the context of the psycho-social intervention, will be illustrated by means of the examing of diverse intervention programs, support and self-help groups in different intervention environments: the family, old age, the mentaly ill integration in the community, drug addiction, handicaps and chronic illnesses. Also,citizens knowledge and attitudes, professionals and groups of risk will be analyzed toward the support and self-help groups, it will be studied the role that the professional of intervention of the community can carry out in the promotion and social legitimation of the support and self-help groups, and forms of collaboration will be examined between professionals and support and self-help groups.
