| In this module we will analyze the building materials and their use in the main architectural cultures, following up a historical development from the Antique cultures to the Modern Epoch. We will study every basic architectural element: the realizations of the wall, the factory types or the use of mortars. Later on we will analyze some of the main structures of a building: the parts of a building, systems of supports, columns and pillars, architectural orders, the roofing systems: plane roof or gabled roof, the problem of the arch, different vaulting systems, domes. The objective is to facilitate the understanding of the use of materials and the architectural process of building from the technical point of view as opposed to the identification from a stylistic point of view. |
