The program's main objective is to offer insight into the key moments within the evolution of use of writing in western society. The evolution of Latin writing is parallel to the ascent of the Roman Empire as the great Mediterranean power. In the same way, the crisis of the Empire in the third century will produce a series of modifications in written production, due to socioeconomic changes. Consequently, a recession in the use of writing appears in the Middle Ages, situation that will persist until the XI-XII centuries, when economic and social changes allow traditionally deprived access to writing. The end of the Middle Ages will see the importance of the written word as instrument of power and control, leading to the birth of the Modern State. Finally, Humanism as new vision of reality, will search for new vehicles of communication:graphic forms, books and libraries, trend that will continue to develop throughout the Modern Ages. |
