While trying to avoid the uneven configurations and evolutions in the American continent, the contemporary history of America will be analyzed from a global perspective, from the beginning of the independence processes in the 18th century until the recent processes of democratization and redefinition of State in the last decades of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century. We will analyze the origins of the independence processes, the conflicts in the consolidation of the national states in the north and the south of the continent, as well as the integration to the world market of the Latin American subcontinent while the United States became a world power. The 20th century, and especially its last third, receives a preferable attention, centred on what Latin America does, in the democracy-dictatorship-democracy process. |
