Continguts
The aim of this course is to outline the history of practical philosophy and society by means of a brief selection of texts, and to introduce students to the main aspects of current times, mainly on the basis of the "critical theory" of society and contemporary theories of international law.


Themes:

1. - The tradition of the Aristotelian ethics-politics. - The tradition of the Roman Law.

2. - Sovereignty and Modern State. - The system of modern States. - The classic authors of international law.

3. - State and revolution. - Liberalism and democracy. - The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of 1789 and its interpretation by Kant. - The liberal-democratic order, and its dynamics.

4. - Hegel s "Philosophy of Law". - Carl Schmitt s "Earth and Sea". - The structural instability of the liberal order. - Beyond the liberal order: modern and contemporary utopian thought. - The view of the expansion of the Western world in the "Hegelian right" and in the "Hegelian left".

5. - The "long 19th century" and the "short 20th century". - The foundations of the post-war Western order. - The present transformation of the post-war order.
