| Descripción del Curso/Contents for the course The course is basically practical with some theoretical discussion of the specific problems posed by literary texts in English. Theory: Students will be referred to essays and books cited in the bibliography. -Basic theoretical frameworks and notions: approaches (linguistic, functional, semiotic, interpretive), strategies, methods; fidelity, equivalence, literal, free translation, paraphrase; translatability; universals of translation; ideology and translation. - Basic techniques and procedures, tools and resources. - The specificity of literary language and its implication in translation. Translation as stylistic analysis. - Common problems: ambiguity, overtones, wordplay, neologisms, personification, proper names, style, diachronic change, cultural issues. - Translation criticism: criteria and methods for translation quality assessment. - Prose translation. - Poetry translation.
