Descripción del Curso/Contents for the course
The course is basically practical with some theoretical discussion of the specific problems posed by literary texts in English.
Theory: Students will be referred to essays and books cited in the bibliography.
-Basic theoretical frameworks and notions: approaches (linguistic, functional, semiotic, interpretive), strategies, methods; fidelity, equivalence, literal, free translation, paraphrase; translatability; universals of translation; ideology and translation.
- Basic techniques and procedures, tools and resources.
- The specificity of literary language and its implication in translation. Translation as stylistic analysis.
- Common problems: ambiguity, overtones, wordplay, neologisms, personification, proper names, style, diachronic change, cultural issues.
- Translation criticism: criteria and methods for translation quality assessment.
- Prose translation.
- Poetry translation. The treatment of verse forms.
- Drama translation and verse drama translation. Shakespeare translation.

Practice:
Translation and criticism of prose, verse and dramatic texts provided in the course dossier.
Translations by individual students will be anonymously distributed in class for collective assessment guided by the lecturer. Therefore students are expected to bring copies of their own translation to class.
Students will be able to practice at home by translating into the target langu
