Theory:
1. Medieval drama: From the Latin trop to the Mystery plays. The Wakefield Second ShepherdÆs Play. Professionalization of drama. Morality plays. Everyman.

2. Tudor and Elizabethan drama: Conditions, theatres, audiences. Interludes. Classical Roman influence. The beginning of English comedy and tragedy (Gorboduc). The University Wits. Thomas Kyd and The Spanish Tragedy. Christopher Marlowe: Edward II.
-William Shakespeare: Command of language: use of prose and verse, rhetoric. Use of sources, interplay of plot and subplots, metatheatre. History plays: Richard II, Richard III, Henry IV (parts I and II). Comedy: The Comedy of Errors, A MidsummerÆs NightÆs Dream, As You Like It, Twelfth Night. Tragedy: King Lear, Titus Andronicus, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello. Romance plays: The Tempest.
