The course combines lectures and practical classes (including group discussions in seminars) in which students are encouraged to put into use their critical competence. Lectures will focus on clarification and discussion of key concepts and techniques students should be familiar with.

Continguts
A selected literary work will be used throughout the course (an annotated text will be provided in the dossier) as reference text on which different approaches will be applied.
-Access to primary sources: works and their texts, kinds of editions. Access to secondary sources: bibliographies, reference works. The use of Internet resources.
- Scholarly writing: conventions in structure, style, and documentation.
- Pre-critical response to a literary text: setting, plot, character, structure, language and style, atmosphere or mood, theme.
- Literary conventions in the three main genres. Poetry and verse: prosody, rhythm and meter, rhyme, stanzas, scansion and expressive uses of meter. Narrative: story (“fabula”) and plot (“sjuzet”), focalization and types of narrators. Drama and theatre. Dialogue: words and silences, pragmatic approach. Stagecraft. Theatre production.
- Critical approaches: textual scholarship, source studies, genre approach, biography, formalism (New Criticism), rhetoric and stylistics, structuralism, psychoanalysis, mythological and archetypal criticism, Marxist criticism, poststructuralism and deconstruction, feminist approach, New Historicism, cultural studies, post-colonial criticism, reader-oriented criticism, comparative literature and intertextual approach.
- Stylistic commentary or explication of a fragment or short work (as an integrated approach).

- to help students develop their own critical skills to understand and provide a reasoned response to a literary text in English
- to guide students in the use of resources for the study of literature and for essay writing
- to familiarize students with the main critical approaches to literary texts
- to make students appreciate how the same work can be differently criticized according to the approach taken
