Objetivos/Aims of the Course

1) To provide a basic familiarity with many of the most important authors of the United States and the period or movement to which they belonged.
2) To provide a broad awareness of the diverse cultural (religious, philosophical, political, social, etc.) problems and concerns that have shaped American life and letters.
3) To point out how most of those problems and concerns are still actively shaping contemporary American writing.
4) To stimulate the studentsÆ intellectual curiosity, to develop develop their ability to think independently and to synthesize complex ideas and to encourage their originality. Descripción del Curso/Contents for the course:
This course is a survey of American literature from its beginnings in the early 16th century up until the second half of the 19th century. Periods/Movements to be covered include: the colonial period and Puritanism, the Enlightenment and the Revolution, the early Republic and the establishment of a national literature, Romanticism/Transcentalism, the beginning of Realism.
