A selection of text samples related to the course topics will be studied in class. Students will be working with handouts containing both text samples belonging to a variety of contexts as well as tasks and activities to be done in class.

Continguts
Course Objectives:
1.) The concept of text and related concepts will be introduced.
2.) Students will be made familiar with different text types, and with the specific linguistic and discoursal characteristics displayed.
3.) Texts will be approached as both products and processes of social action.
4.) Students will develop an awareness of the expression of subjectivity in texts, through critical discourse analysis
Contents:
PART I: Understanding texts: theoretical and practical approach

Unit 1 Introduction: Text and related concepts (text, text type, discourse, genre).
Spoken vs. written language.
Unit 2 Text and social action: The importance of context in textual construction
(the role-relationship writer-reader, discourse community and institution,
social and psychological variables of discourse construction.
Unit 3 Top-down and bottom-up approaches to text analysis
Unit 4 How coherence and cohesion is achieved

PART II: Linguistic analysis of texts in specialised genres

Unit 5 Texts in business contexts (correspondence, documents, letters
of application, faxes, memoranda, etc.)
Unit 6 Texts in advertising (advertisement of products and services, language creativity)
Unit 7 Technical and scientific texts (instructions, scientific explanations,...)
Unit 8 Newspapers and texts in press (headlines, information layout,...)
