CONTENTS To acquire the basic knowledge on the nature of the materials with which the students will work in their professional life. To familiarize the students with the main methods of production and characterization of those materials. Lesson 1. - Structure and linkage in organic molecules. Lesson 2. - Hydrocarbons. Lesson 3. - Functional groups containing oxygen. Lesson 4. - Functional groups containing nitrogen. Lesson 5. - Polymer structure. Lesson 6. - Polymer characteristics. Lesson 7. - Polymerization reactions. Applications of polymers. Lesson 8. - Materials for ophthalmic optics. - Lense materials for glasses and contact lenses: - Inorganic glass: Optic properties (refraction index, relative dispersion, transmission, reflection, absorption). Physical properties (density, thermal conductivity, viscosity, elasticity, hardness). Chemical properties. Optic glass presentation: nomenclature, catalogs and maps. - Organic materials: Types of organic materials and properties. Series production of organic lenses. - Materials for rigid, soft and silicone contact lenses - Materials for frames. - Plastic frames: Properties. Polymers for frames and their characteristics. - Metallic frames: raw materials, metals and alloys. Superficial treatments. |
