GENERALITIES: Introduction. Concept of algae. Levels of organization. The algal cell. Reproduction. sexuality and life- cycle types. Abiotic factors. Biotic factors. Ecology of seaweeds. ALGAL BIODIVERSITY: Evolution. The fossil register. The endosymbiotic theory and the origin of eucaryotic algae. Primary , Secondary and Terciary endosymbiosis. Prokaryotic algae. Eukaryotic Algae. MARINE ECOSYSTEMS: Reefs. Biogeography of reefs. Seagrasses. Mangroves.

OBJETIVES:
Study of the organization, reproduction, ecology, phylogenesis and applied aspects in the main groups of algae. Panoramic vision on the biodiversity of algae in the marine and continental aquatic environments. Factors implied in the ecophysiology and distribution of algae. Presentation of the main marine plant formations with biosphere range in which algae and vascular plants take part.
